PRSA Nebraska Welcomes New Board Members

Volunteering for a PRSA committee is a rewarding way for professionals and students to serve the Chapter, network with fellow professionals and gain valuable experience. It also is a pipeline to join our Board of Directors. Six PRSA Nebraska members have joined our Board of Directors in 2021 under the direction of the Executive Team and Board President Jill Heggen.

    Shannon Hilaire, Community Service Chair

Shannon Hilaire has served on the PRSA Nebraska board in the past and is a past PRSA Nebraska president (2018). Shannon is the Communications Director for the American Heart Association.

She holds bachelor’s degrees in Journalism, Spanish and Communication from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

“I have served in other board positions in the past and have always had an interest in getting more involved in our Community Service Chair position,” Shannon said. “I am looking forward to working with the selected community service recipient to help further their mission and goals through PRSA Nebraska.”

    Elizabeth Bauer, Gala Chair

Elizabeth Bauer has been a PRSA Nebraska member for three years. She joins the 2021 PRSA Nebraska board as Gala Chair. She currently serves as a Senior Specialist on the corporate communications team at Hudl, an online sports video platform service headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Elizabeth holds a Master of Arts degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Nebraska—Lincoln and a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Doane College.

“I bring an eager willingness to gain new skills, learn new roles, adopt new technologies, and find creative, on-demand solutions that make me an integral part of the team,” Elizabeth said. “I am thrilled to bring my skill set to the gala chair position and I’m already setting innovative ideas into motion for the 2022 Paper Anvil Awards gala.”

    Derek Sullivan, Monthly Programs Chair

Ahead of joining the board in 2021, Derek Sullivan volunteered with PRSA Nebraska on the gala committee, helping PRSA Nebraska’s biggest event of the year go off without a hitch.

Derek works as a communication associate at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in the departments of Psychiatry and Wellness. He holds a master’s degree in Creative Writing from Hamline University and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from St. Cloud State.

Before joining the communication team at UNMC, Derek was a journalist for 13 years in Minnesota and Iowa.

“It has been a wonderful experience serving as a PRSA Nebraska volunteer for the gala and I am looking forward to bringing innovative and educational programming to our members, students and guests in 2021 as the Monthly Programs Co-Chair,” Derek said.

Kelly Bast, Professional Development/ON Brand Chair

Kelly Bast also served as a committee volunteer before joining the PRSA Nebraska Board in 2021. She is a brand and communications manager at Omaha PR firm, Emspace + Lovgren, where she’s helped nonprofits' stories shine in our community for the past four years.

Kelly graduated from the University of Nebraska Omaha in 2016, where she studied public relations and advertising, along with Spanish, and earned a bachelor's degree in Communications.

"ON Brand is a unique time where our partner organizations band together to host one incredible regional event. I'm thrilled to represent PRSA Nebraska and help plan the upcoming conference with AAF Omaha, AIGA Nebraska and AMA Omaha," Kelly said.

    Ashley Hickson, Membership Chair

In addition to her leadership on the board for PRSA Nebraska, Ashley Hickson serves as the Communications Consultant for the Workplace Solutions (Group Insurance) business unit within Mutual of Omaha, focusing on Internal Communications to 1200+ employees across the nation.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership and Communication from Nebraska Wesleyan University and is currently getting ramped up to begin looking at a master’s program. Before her current role at Mutual of Omaha, she worked in the medical field and group insurance industry.

“I have always had a passion for fueling connectedness and purpose through storytelling,” Ashley said. “I look forward to helping fellow professionals discover the benefits of PRSA Nebraska through my role as Membership Chair.”

    Lyn Wineman, Awards Chair

Lyn Wineman has served in leadership positions for a variety of industry associations in Nebraska and looks forward to serving on the 2021 PRSA Nebraska Board. She is the founder and president of KidGlov, a full-service boutique advertising agency with offices in Lincoln and Omaha.
