The unwanted and unwelcome phenomenon of “fake news” continues to be a chronic disruption to the environment in which communications professionals operate. More significantly, its presence is eroding trust and confidence in credible news and information sources.

This presentation will delve into the origins of fake news and follow its trajectory, providing the latest information on how it is permeating the PR profession and the impact it is having on how we operate. Specifically, the presentation will focus on the following topics:

  • The changing definition and usage of the term “fake news”
  • How fake news impacts real news, challenging the credibility and the influence of genuine media outlets
  • The rise and impact of automated online message dissemination
  • How social platforms are trying to filter and combat fake news

About our Speaker

Dave Collett
Executive Vice President and General Manager

Dave Collett has counseled countless corporate clients on strategic integrated communications and how content can be used as a catalyst of conversations to engage key constituency groups. He is a senior member of the agency’s Corporate Communications practice, leading teams in the Central region of the U.S., specializing in strategy, crisis communications, issues management, corporate reputation and corporate social responsibility communications.

Previously, Collett was the client relationship leader and Weber Shandwick lead for one of the agency’s largest global accounts, responsible for setting overarching communications strategy and ensuring the performance of all Weber Shandwick teams and work-streams across countries and continents. Prior to joining Weber Shandwick in April 2004, Collett was a vice president at another major communications firm, becoming well-versed in developing strategies for forging relationships with media, analysts and other influencers at all levels. Before that, Collett was on the corporate communications team at McDonnell-Douglas, which at the time was one of the nation’s largest defense contractors and is now a part of Boeing.

Active in the St. Louis community, he’s served as board member and senior advisors for organizations like the March of Dimes, the Parkway School District and the Magic House Children’s Museum. In 2015, he received the St. Louis All-Star Award for his work on the STL Forward Initiative. He also has written for the Associated Press and WIRED Magazine and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Truman State University.
